False Killer Whales at Point Lisas

02/23/10

A rough estimate of 30 False Killer Whales visited Point Lisas on 12 February 2010. They came into the harbour with the ocean current.  See pics below!

False Killer Whales are large members of the dolphin family (delphinidae).  These highly social animals travel in groups of 10-60, forming strong bonds with other members of their pods. Individuals are known to share pieces of their kills with other pod members. Usually they are found in deeper water.  The False Killer Whale is jet black or a very dark grey color and has a rounded streamline head with slender tall dorsal fins located midway between its head and tail.   They feed mainly on fish and cephalopods (squid and octupus) and occasionally eat other marine mammals.
